What Are the Symptoms of Dampness in the Home?

Damp is responsible for a lot of property damage in the UK, thanks to the inherently moist climate we have in this part of the world, and if your home is old, there is even more of a risk it might be affected by dampness of some form. Here are some of the types of damp that can be found in your home, along with typical symptoms to look out for.

  • Dry Rot – Dry rot attacks timber and if left unchecked, it will cause major damage, which is why you should carry out regular inspections, primarily looking for the signs. They include the presence of a musky odour, rusty red coloured spores on the timber and darkening of the wood are all signs of dry rot.

  • Rising Damp – Perhaps the most feared of all damp issues, rising damp comes up from the ground and attacks brickwork, plaster and timber. If you suspect your home suffers with rising damp, there are damp specialists in Chelsea who can carry out tests and determine the extent of the problem. Signs of rising damp include flaky paint, bubbling plaster and lifting wall paper, so if you notice anything like this, don’t hesitate to call in a damp specialist.

  • Wet Rot – Easier to treat than dry rot, wet rot leaves timber with a soft, spongy feel, while the affected area also looks darker than the rest of the wall. If you think you may have wet rot in your property, you have little choice but to call in a local damp proofing company, who can carry out tests and then make the necessary repairs, while also ensuring that the problem does not recur.

Older properties are more at risk, as the damp proofing of many years ago would be ineffective, and by dealing with it quickly, you can minimise the damage caused.
